The Honesty Score

The -30 on honesty is based on documented evidence across multiple categories:

The Uber Files. In 2022, leaked documents revealed that Uber systematically lobbied governments, evaded regulators, and used a "kill switch" to shut down systems during police raids. The leaks covered operations in dozens of countries.

Regulatory actions. Uber has faced enforcement actions from transport regulators in London, multiple US states, and across the EU. TfL revoked Uber's licence in London twice.

Court proceedings. Uber settled a criminal investigation in the US related to concealing a 2016 data breach that exposed 57 million user records. The company's former chief security officer was convicted of federal obstruction charges.

The Fair Pay Score

The -40 on Fair Pay & Worker Respect reflects the central controversy of Uber's business model. Courts in the UK, France, the Netherlands, and multiple US states have ruled or are ruling on whether Uber drivers are employees or independent contractors. The UK Supreme Court ruled in 2021 that drivers are workers entitled to minimum wage and holiday pay.

One Positive Score

Uber currently scores -20 on Respect for Cultures & Communities, reflecting some documented investment in local community programs and diverse hiring initiatives.

That is the entire positive case for Uber's ethical performance.
