A phone advertised with seven years of updates may have much less than seven years remaining when you buy it. The support clock often starts with the model’s original release, not the date a retailer sells you an older or refurbished unit.
To compare long-lasting phones, put the actual end date on your shortlist. Then check what kind of support that date describes.
Three promises that should not be merged
| Promise | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Operating-system upgrades | How many major versions, or which support period, are promised? |
| Security updates | When does support end, and what cadence applies? |
| Hardware service and parts | Which repairs remain available, where, and subject to what conditions? |
An operating-system version, a year of patches and the availability of a replacement screen are different things. A company may describe them on separate support pages.
Google: the starting date matters
Google says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of updates from first US Google Store availability. That wording matters for a discounted phone bought several years after release.
For example, if a hypothetical device’s support ends in September 2030 and you buy it in September 2026, the remaining period is four years. A retailer repeating the original seven-year headline has not added three years to the manufacturer’s commitment.
Samsung: check the model-specific commitment
Samsung’s 2024 sustainability report describes seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for specified models including the Galaxy S24 range.
That is evidence about named products, not a reason to assume every Samsung phone has the same policy. Check the support information for the exact device and market you intend to buy, particularly when comparing an older flagship with a newer budget model.
Apple: service status is not an iOS deadline
Apple’s vintage and obsolete product guidance concerns hardware service and parts. Its definitions use the period since Apple stopped distributing the product for sale.
Do not convert that into a guaranteed operating-system update end date. Also distinguish a retailer still selling leftover stock from Apple continuing distribution. They are not necessarily the same event.
Fairphone: use the promised end year
Fairphone states that the Gen. 6 has software support until at least 2033. Record the end year rather than assuming a fresh support period begins whenever you purchase one.
All forward commitments should be treated as commitments. They are useful buying evidence, but the future delivery of every promised update cannot be verified in advance.
Make the comparison useful
Write a row for each candidate: exact model, source link, start date, stated end date, remaining years, and repair route. Leave a field unknown when the manufacturer does not make a clear promise. An honest unknown is better than an invented date.
Then ask whether the remaining support matches how long you plan to keep the phone. If you expect five years of use, a bargain with two supported years remaining may not be the bargain it first appears.
