There is no perfectly ethical smartphone. Every handset depends on a global supply chain spanning minerals, components, assembly, software, logistics and eventual disposal. The useful question is therefore narrower: which manufacturer has the strongest current evidence profile, and where are the trade-offs?
This ranking uses Mashinii's live company records as checked on 19 August 2026. Scores run from -100 to +100 across up to eleven ethical dimensions. Negative scores represent verified adverse evidence; positive scores require verified evidence of beneficial conduct. A zero is neutral in the current record, not proof that no problem exists.
How the ranking works
We score companies rather than individual phone models. For this comparison, the overall ordering uses the mean of each company's applicable dimension scores. Dimensions without a current score are excluded rather than treated as zero.
That produces a transparent snapshot, but not a universal answer. Someone who prioritises privacy may reasonably choose differently from someone focused on worker treatment, minerals or climate.

These averages are a navigation aid, not a moral verdict. The dimension-level evidence matters more than the gap between two nearby averages.
1. Samsung: the least-negative overall profile
Samsung currently ranks first by a narrow margin. Its clearest positive is Fair Pay & Worker Respect at +30. Its negative scores include Planet-Friendly Business -20, Respect for Cultures & Communities -20, and Fair Trade & Ethical Sourcing -20. Zero Waste, Weapons and Safe Tech each stand at -10.
That is not a clean record. It means Samsung's current profile is less negative in aggregate than the other listed manufacturers in this comparison. For hardware buyers, sourcing and environmental performance remain material weaknesses. Samsung's own 2025 Sustainability Report describes its policies and targets; its responsible-minerals disclosure provides additional supply-chain context. Corporate disclosures describe company policy and should be read alongside independent and regulatory evidence in the live score.

2. Xiaomi: strongest worker score, weaker circularity
Xiaomi's standout result is Fair Pay & Worker Respect at +40, the highest positive score in this comparison. Its overall position is pulled down by Zero Waste & Sustainable Products at -30 and Planet-Friendly Business at -20. Weapons, animal welfare, community impact, sourcing and safe technology each currently score -10.
This creates a genuinely mixed profile: Xiaomi performs comparatively well on worker evidence but poorly on product circularity and environmental evidence. Buyers who care most about labour may weigh that differently from buyers focused on repairability, e-waste or privacy.

3. Apple: the strongest privacy result, but not the strongest overall
Apple's current positive is Safe & Smart Tech at +20. That supports the company's relative strength on privacy and security architecture, but the rest of its record is substantially more critical than the previous version of this article showed.
Apple currently scores Respect for Cultures & Communities -30; Zero Waste, Planet and Honest Business -20; and Fair Pay and Fair Trade -10. Weapons, animal welfare and health are neutral in the current record.
Apple's Supply Chain Innovation reports and 2024 Conflict Minerals Report describe its due-diligence systems. Those disclosures should not be treated as independent verification. For example, reporting on questions raised by the Democratic Republic of Congo gives important adversarial context to the company's sourcing claims (Associated Press).

4. Google / Pixel: the most negative current profile
Google's Class C record has no positive dimension in the current snapshot. Honest & Fair Business, No War, No Weapons, and Safe & Smart Tech each score -40. Fair Pay scores -20, while environment, community impact, sourcing and health each score -10.
That makes Google the weakest overall profile in this comparison despite the Pixel line's software and security reputation. The result reflects Alphabet's company-wide conduct, not only the physical handset. Advertising, data governance, defence relationships and wider platform conduct therefore affect the score.

Where Fairphone fits
Fairphone remains important context because it is designed around longevity, repairability and fairer materials. It is not included in this public-company ranking because it is privately held and does not have the same public-market record in Mashinii's universe.
Fairphone's impact overview and 2024 Impact Report document its modular design, repairability, material sourcing and worker programmes. As with every corporate report, these are first-party claims and should be assessed critically.
What this means for buyers
There is no winner without qualification:
- Samsung has the least-negative overall score, but sourcing and environment remain weaknesses.
- Xiaomi has the strongest worker score, offset by weak circularity and environmental results.
- Apple leads this group on safe technology, but its wider social and business record lowers its position.
- Google has the most negative current company-wide profile, particularly on business conduct, weapons and safe technology.
- Fairphone is the purpose-built repairability alternative, but it sits outside this listed-company ranking.
Scores can change when new evidence is verified. Use the live records rather than relying indefinitely on any static table.
