Is Zara Ethical?

Zara has meaningful repair and collective-bargaining initiatives, but these do not settle concerns about cotton traceability or adequate factory pay. Its parent reports extensive audits and worker programmes; those counts are not proof of living wages. We would judge a purchase by its likely use, construction and material evidence, rather than a broad sustainability promise.

Who owns Zara and benefits from its sales?

Zara belongs to Spanish listed clothing group Inditex. Its 2025 corporate-governance report identifies founder Amancio Ortega as the controlling beneficial owner, with 59.294% of voting rights at January 31, 2026 through Pontegadea Inversiones and Partler Participaciones. This is a publicly traded group with a controlling founder, not an independent Zara business. Ownership disclosure

The parent relationship is useful when checking claims: group-wide wage or material figures can inform an assessment of Zara, but they are not automatically results for every Zara garment. A purchasing decision concerns a specific product; responsibility for purchasing practices also sits with the much larger organisation behind it.

Do millions of people reached mean millions paid fairly?

Inditex says its Workers in the Centre strategy reached 3.1 million people over 2023–2025. Its 2025 disclosures also record 6,039 social audits and 410 social corrective-action plans. These show the scale of its oversight and programmes, not how many people earned a living wage or whether workers confirmed that remedies lasted. 2025 worker disclosures

Inditex is listed as a signatory to legally binding agreements supporting collectively bargained wages in Cambodia. That deserves more weight than a general aspiration because it creates commitments around a bargaining process. For the person making clothes, the practical questions are the pay packet, predictable working time and freedom to organise. A useful follow-up is which factories have concluded agreements, which workers are covered and what changed in real pay after local living costs. Reporting programme reach alone cannot answer those questions.

What was the Brazilian cotton investigation?

Earthsight’s April 2024 investigation traced cotton exports from Brazilian agribusinesses to Asian manufacturers supplying Zara and other retailers. It connected the cotton producers to environmental and land-rights concerns. Inditex acknowledged buying finished goods from the identified manufacturers but said supplier information indicated they did not directly buy Brazilian cotton. These are documented supply-chain findings and disputed responses, not a court verdict that a particular Zara shirt contains illegally grown cotton. The distinction matters: an indirect connection is a reason for stronger traceability and investigation, not permission to accuse every product or farmer.

In its June 2024 follow-up, Earthsight reported that Inditex demanded greater transparency from Better Cotton. The cotton producers denied wrongdoing, while the certification scheme disputed aspects of the criticism. Those responses must remain alongside the concerns. Can Zara repair clothes you already own?

Zara has published UK terms for a paid repair service through Zara Pre-Owned. The service concerns Zara garments and a specified repair request; the terms provide for pricing and payment rather than a lifetime free-repair promise. A repair offer is most useful when it keeps a garment you like in circulation. Compare the total quote with a local tailor, including delivery and whether the work addresses the actual failure. A new zip can solve one problem; it cannot make thin, damaged fabric sound again. Having a route to repair is positive, but it does not demonstrate that every new item is built for repeated use.

When is buying Zara reasonable value?

Start with a gap in your wardrobe rather than the arrival of another collection. Check seams, fastenings, lining and the care label; consider whether you will still want the item when the styling stops being new. These observations cannot certify factory conditions, but they can prevent an unnecessary purchase.

If your concern is workers’ rights, prioritise disclosed wage outcomes and effective bargaining. If it is land use, ask for traceability beyond the sewing factory. If it is cost, compare the likely number of wears and feasible repairs, without pretending we can predict a lifespan from a website. Zara’s programmes offer some tools; the unresolved issue is whether purchasing more clothes produces a better outcome for the people and places supplying them.
