Is Gap Ethical?

Brand ethicsClothing & footwear
Mashinii Research · Sources checked

Gap has meaningful supplier programmes, but unresolved pay and workplace problems prevent a confident ethical recommendation. Its parent discloses improvements and has helped secure compensation for workers at an Old Navy supplier. That remedy deserves credit alongside the remaining gaps. Current assessment · Worker-confirmed remedy

Are workers guaranteed a living wage?

Gap Inc.’s vendor code requires the higher of legal minimum wages and prevailing industry standards. Pay sufficient for basic needs and discretionary income is encouraged. That wording matters: meeting the mandatory floor is not the same as guaranteeing a living wage. The code also prohibits quotas that force workers to exceed regular hours just to earn the required minimum. Vendor code, wages section

Good On You’s assessment dated 7 August 2026 finds no evidence that Gap ensures living wages across its supply chain. It credits some labour policies and programmes while rating the brand “It’s a start” overall. This is an assessment of available disclosure, not evidence that every worker is underpaid. Gap assessment

The missing information is practical: how many workers meet a credible local living-wage benchmark in a normal working week, and what happens to the pay of those who do not? Counting training sessions or audits cannot answer that question.

What do Gap’s own factory checks find?

Gap Inc.’s published 2025 assessment summary reports wage, benefit or employment-term findings at 28% of assessed factories and working-hours findings at 36%. The corresponding 2024 figures were 36% and 49%. The categories are broad: a wage-related finding can concern documentation, overtime, leave or severance, so these figures should not be described as percentages of workers suffering wage theft. Factory assessment results

The direction is encouraging, but the remaining incidence is significant. Gap says identified issues receive factory improvement plans and follow-up with suppliers. The useful next disclosure would show which corrections were completed and whether affected workers confirmed them. A lower annual percentage alone cannot tell us how much of the change comes from improvement, different factories or different detection.

Has Gap helped workers obtain compensation?

Yes, there is a concrete parent-company example. In a 2026 update, the Worker Rights Consortium said 14 workers dismissed while pregnant or serving as union leaders at Haiti’s The Willbes factory received compensation equivalent to 22 months of wages each. WRC credited Gap with securing the remedy after initially accepting the factory’s account. Rehiring priority remained subject to monitoring. WRC’s account of the outcome

The factory supplied Old Navy, not evidence of production for the Gap label. We include this because it shows how the shared parent responded when challenged, and because an honest assessment should recognise remedies as well as violations. It would be misleading either to attribute the dismissals to every Gap product or to omit the compensation and suggest nothing changed.

What does “more sustainable cotton” actually mean?

Gap Inc.’s 2025 highlights group together Better Cotton, organic, recycled and US Cotton Trust Protocol cotton under its preferred-sourcing claim. It also reports 65% recycled polyester and a 70% reduction in direct-operation emissions against 2017. Those are group disclosures, not material specifications for every Gap garment. 2025 impact highlights

The grouped cotton claim does not mean every item is organic or recycled. Read the fibre label and any item-specific certification separately. Similarly, direct-operation emissions cover a different boundary from the impact of growing fibres and manufacturing clothes. Ask whether a prominent percentage describes the whole business, one material or just its shops and offices.

We would welcome material improvements without treating them as a reason to buy additional clothes. An item that fills a real wardrobe gap and gets repeated use is more useful to you than an unnecessary purchase justified by a broad environmental label.

Who owns Gap, and does a sale make it good value?

Gap is one of Gap Inc.’s four principal brands, alongside Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta. A change between those shops is not a change of parent company. Their shared ownership does not mean identical factories, quality or prices. Current corporate brand portfolio

Good On You identifies heavy discounting and a large assortment as part of its concern about Gap’s business model. That criticism is about the incentive to consume more, not a finding that a particular advertised discount is unlawful. Business-model assessment

Judge a purchase by the final price, composition, fit and likely use rather than the percentage off. Compare only genuinely similar items; a full-price reference is not evidence of quality. We have not tested the garments or verified a price history, so we cannot promise that waiting for a sale produces a particular saving. For an item you already own, mending a seam or replacing a button may be more useful than chasing another promotion.
