Stumptown makes a credible case for buyers who value long-term producer relationships. It reports that over 90% of its 2025 coffee purchases came through relationships lasting at least three years. That is meaningful, but it does not prove every grower or worker earns enough. Our verdict is positive on sourcing continuity, qualified on income outcomes. Sourcing disclosure
Direct trade: a relationship, not a universal certification
Stumptown says it reserves its Direct Trade description for producers it has bought from for at least three consecutive years, with an intention to continue. It describes negotiating with individual producers or representatives of cooperatives and associations. The model is therefore more specific than simply buying an expensive coffee with a farm name on the bag. How its model works
The company also acknowledges that other sellers use the term differently. Do not assume that two bags marked direct trade carry identical commitments. Stumptown links its approach to quality premiums, producer familiarity and sustained purchasing relationships. Brand’s explanation
The ethical value is continuity: a producer can plan around a buyer who returns. But a relationship’s duration does not reveal all of its terms. A useful comparison asks whether the seller explains how prices are set, who receives them and how the producer can raise a problem. The phrase alone cannot answer those questions.
What does Enveritas verification actually establish?
Stumptown reports that Enveritas verified all its 2025 purchases. That is a coverage claim about its sourcing assessment, not a statement that every farm passed every possible sustainability test. Purchase verification disclosure
Enveritas explains this distinction itself. Its responsible-sourcing approach combines assessment of risks with commitments to improvement and farmer-support investment. It explicitly says that the claim does not mean every supplying farm meets every one of its 30 sustainability standards. Verifier’s consumer explanation
This is worth understanding before paying a premium. An approach that identifies difficult conditions and funds improvement can be valuable. It becomes misleading only if consumers are led to hear “no problems exist” when the actual assurance concerns how problems are identified and addressed. We have not found evidence here that Stumptown makes that universal promise.
Can a higher bean price prove a living income?
No. A quality premium is a payment term; a living income is an outcome for a household after costs. They are related, but not interchangeable. The evidence reviewed supports the existence of sustained relationships and verification. It does not establish a universal living-income result or a guaranteed wage for every hired picker.
That limits our recommendation without cancelling the positives. If you choose Stumptown for the relationship model, you have a specific reason supported by disclosure. If you choose it because you believe the premium guarantees that everyone is paid fairly, the evidence does not support that stronger conclusion.
Is it still independent?
Peet’s records adding Stumptown to its portfolio in 2015. The wider JDE Peet’s group was acquired by Keurig Dr Pepper in April 2026. Stumptown’s local identity should therefore not be confused with independent ownership. Peet’s history · Completed acquisition
Ownership matters when your aim is to support a small independent business. It does not automatically tell you whether a particular producer contract is fair or whether the coffee tastes good. Those claims need their own evidence. Similarly, the planned future separation of a corporate group should not be described as already completed merely because management announced it.
What does B Corp add?
B Lab lists Stumptown as certified and shows a 104.9 overall impact score under the assessment version displayed. The record includes employee, community, environmental and governance categories. This provides a broader business assessment than direct trade alone. It is B Lab’s score, not a Mashinii rating or a product-quality test. Certification record
For staff treatment, the existence of an assessment is useful context. It still should not replace specific evidence on wages, benefits or a worker’s experience at a particular operation. For shoppers, the best use of the record is to inspect its categories and scope rather than treat a single total as a complete moral ranking.
When is the premium worth paying?
Stumptown is most defensible when you value its particular coffee and its disclosed purchasing relationships together. Compare the actual bag weight, freshness and price with another coffee you would happily drink. This research has not taste-tested the beans or established a universal price advantage.
Our ethical assessment would improve with clearer household-income outcomes and worker-level evidence alongside the existing sourcing coverage. Until then, the strongest claim is a serious approach to relationships and assessment—not a guarantee that a higher retail price has resolved every problem at origin.
