Is Folgers Ethical?

Brand ethicsCoffee
Mashinii Research · Sources checked

Folgers has identifiable farmer-support projects, but they do not establish fair incomes across its supply chain. Our judgement is mixed: useful initiatives and incomplete outcome evidence. A disputed serving claim also makes price-per-weight comparisons particularly valuable, although the 2025 appeal concerned class certification, not a finding that every buyer was deceived. Court decision

What happened to the claim about how many cups a tub makes?

Consumers alleged that Folgers containers overstated the number of cups obtainable using the brewing instructions. On 26 November 2025, the Eighth Circuit reversed certification of a Missouri class, finding that individual questions about deception and loss prevented the proposed class from proceeding on that basis. Original court opinion

That procedural decision should not be turned into either “Folgers was found guilty of cheating everyone” or “the court proved every serving claim correct.” The useful distinction is between the allegation and what the court actually decided. This page does not establish that the particular container currently on your shelf has the same label as the products litigated.

When comparing value, check the net weight and the amount of grounds you actually use. A stated cup is not necessarily your mug, and your preferred strength affects the number of drinks a container produces. Price per unit of dry coffee gives you a more stable starting point than an optimistic serving total.

Are higher prices just higher profits?

Smucker’s fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter results show higher pricing across its US retail coffee portfolio. Pricing contributed 21 percentage points to sales growth, while volume and product mix reduced growth by eight points. The company also reported higher commodity and tariff costs; the coffee segment’s profit margin fell compared with the prior-year quarter. Company results

This is evidence that prices rose, but not proof of profiteering. Nor does a portfolio-level change tell us exactly how much a specific Folgers pack rose at a particular retailer. Retail promotions, pack weights and product mix make that comparison more complicated.

For a household buying the same coffee every week, keeping the weight and receipt together is more informative than comparing the shape of two tubs. Our standard for a shrinkflation claim is a dated like-for-like product comparison. We have not established one here, so we do not label an assumed pack change as a verified fact.

What reaches the farmers?

Folgers describes work with Enveritas to identify sustainability issues and support for projects in Guatemala and Indonesia. Its Best Part Promise links these efforts to parent company J.M. Smucker. These are identifiable activities, but the page does not provide a brand-wide guarantee of living incomes. Folgers sourcing commitments

There is useful corroboration from the organisation doing the work. In August 2026, TechnoServe reported that the Smucker-funded Plus Café programme had registered 1,905 women, representing 72% of participants. It describes agricultural coaching alongside work on women’s participation in household and farm decisions. Programme implementer’s account

That matters because agricultural training alone does not tell you who controls the resulting income. Supporting women’s decision-making addresses a different problem from simply producing more beans. Still, programme participation is not the same as independently measured income gains, and neither figure tells us what share of all Folgers coffee comes from the participating farms.

Does American roasting answer the labour question?

Smucker identifies its New Orleans facilities as producers of Folgers and other coffee brands. Its page gives employee accounts and historical payroll information. This establishes a domestic manufacturing connection; it does not mean that the beans were grown in the United States or that the page independently verifies working conditions. New Orleans operations

The distinction between a roasting job and a farming livelihood is essential. They sit at different points in the same product’s supply chain and need different evidence. For employees, useful disclosure would cover actual wage ranges, benefits, scheduling and worker representation. For growers, it would cover purchase terms, costs and net income. A positive story about one group cannot stand in for the other.

Who owns Folgers, and what would improve the verdict?

Folgers belongs to J.M. Smucker, which lists it among its brands in the fiscal 2026 results. The same company also sells Café Bustelo and licensed Dunkin’ packaged coffee. Switching labels within that portfolio does not necessarily change the corporate recipient of your spending. Current ownership disclosure

Our assessment would strengthen with independently checked farm-income results, clear sourcing coverage and transparent consumer labelling. The existing projects deserve credit for having named partners and defined activities. They should not be used to imply that every purchase guarantees a fair livelihood.

If Folgers fits your budget and taste, the evidence does not justify treating that preference as a moral failure. If you want your coffee spending to carry a stronger income assurance, compare the exact assurance offered by alternatives and its coverage. Paying more is not evidence by itself. The practical test is whether the seller can explain what happens beyond the brand promise—and support the answer with results.
