Are Samsung Galaxy Books Ethical?

Brand ethicsPhones & computers
Mashinii Research · Sources checked

A Galaxy Book is easier to justify when its exact model has affordable repair options and will stay useful for years. Samsung publishes service documentation, but its wider repair relationship has faced serious criticism. Group labour agreements and environmental targets add context; they do not certify an individual laptop. Judge the machine’s maintainability before paying for the ecosystem or an AI label.

Who owns Galaxy Book, and what does the family include?

Galaxy Book is a Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. laptop family. It is not a separate ethical brand with independent ownership. Samsung’s January 2025 announcement, for example, identifies Book5 Pro and Book5 360 as different additions to the range, alongside other configurations. That naming matters because screen size, convertible design and generation can change what a repair involves. Samsung’s ownership and product announcement

The wider Samsung name covers multiple businesses. Claims about Samsung Electronics should be distinguished from an allegation about another group company, and a mobile-phone teardown should not be presented as a laptop inspection. This guide follows that boundary rather than assigning one universal repair verdict to everything called Galaxy.

Can you repair or upgrade a Galaxy Book?

Samsung’s Canadian support page for the 14-inch Book5 Pro lists an English repair guide for the NP940/NP944 XHA models. Documentation is a useful starting point, but it does not establish current local stock or the price of a battery, display or keyboard assembly. Match the full model number before relying on a guide. Book5 Pro repair-document listing

For an older Galaxy Book Pro 15-inch, iFixit documents replacement of the primary SSD, including opening the case, disconnecting the battery and removing the drive. It specifies an M.2 2242 primary slot for that model. That is a concrete example of storage repair access, not proof that every newer Book has the same slot or that its memory is upgradeable. Model-specific SSD guide

A storage upgrade can help keep a suitable laptop useful. It cannot solve every limitation, and it should not be assumed merely because a retailer offers several capacities at checkout. Before buying, compare the actual repair quote for likely wear items with the cost of replacing the machine.

Why does Samsung’s repair reputation deserve scrutiny?

In May 2024, iFixit announced the end of its designated Samsung parts partnership, citing expensive parts, restrictions on supply to shops and designs that bundled batteries with screens. This is the former partner’s firsthand criticism of the programme. It should not be rewritten as evidence that the battery in every Galaxy Book is glued to its screen. iFixit’s explanation

The lesson for a laptop buyer is about practical access. An official repair programme is only valuable if the parts can be obtained on terms that make repair worthwhile. The existence of Book service documents is a positive, while the earlier dispute makes it sensible to verify prices and availability rather than accepting a broad claim of repair friendliness.

What privacy choices come with a Windows AI PC?

For supported Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft’s Recall documentation says saving screen snapshots requires opt-in and keeps them locally. Users can pause saving, delete snapshots and exclude apps or websites. Those controls concern a Windows feature, not a promise about every Samsung service or cloud assistant installed on the laptop. Recall’s current controls

Decide separately whether a searchable screen history is useful and whether you want to connect phone, laptop and cloud services. Integration can reduce effort, but it also increases the number of settings and accounts involved. A feature working conveniently across devices does not explain where every associated piece of information is stored.

What is the evidence on worker treatment?

Reuters reported on May 27, 2026 that Samsung Electronics’ unionised workers in South Korea approved a wage agreement, averting a threatened strike affecting chip supply. That is evidence of collective bargaining and a specific outcome, not a finding about conditions at all Galaxy Book assembly sites. Reporting on the union vote

Samsung’s 2025 sustainability report also describes its freedom-of-association commitments and an earlier Korean bargaining agreement. Such disclosures should be read alongside workers’ ability to negotiate in practice. Neither a company policy nor a particular wage deal establishes fair pay throughout the global supply chain. Samsung’s labour disclosures

Does a sustainability target make this a greener purchase?

The same report distinguishes targets for Samsung’s consumer-device and semiconductor divisions, including different timelines for direct and purchased-energy emissions. These are corporate targets with defined scopes; they are not a claim that a Galaxy Book’s complete lifecycle has no emissions. Environmental targets and scope

A more defensible decision is to buy a machine you can keep: suitable performance, a verifiable repair route and a configuration that meets your work without an early replacement. If your existing laptop already does that, the presence of a new AI feature is not, by itself, an environmental reason to upgrade.
