Are HP Laptops Ethical?

Some HP business laptops have practical repair support that can extend their useful life, but that does not make every HP laptop an ethical choice. The company’s own supplier reporting shows substantial gaps in working-hours and wage compliance. Assess the exact model’s repairability and ownership costs alongside those labour concerns before buying.

Which company makes HP laptops?

HP laptops belong to HP Inc., the publicly traded personal-systems and printing company. Hewlett Packard Enterprise is a separate business following the 2015 separation. What do HP’s own supplier audits reveal?

HP’s 2025 Sustainability Progress Report gives audited-site conformance rates of 35% for working hours and 55% for wages and benefits. Those figures describe audited production-supplier sites, not percentages of all workers or all HP laptops. HP says supplier changes and its two-year audit cycle mean the sites are not necessarily the same from year to year. 2025 report, pages 80–82

HP acknowledges excessive hours as a persistent problem. It describes corrective actions and reports stronger performance in a separate Labor KPI Programme: 98% of its participating suppliers met working-hours requirements. For the person buying a laptop, the ethical issue is not just whether a supplier has passed a general assessment. It is whether workers can earn enough without excessive hours, receive benefits and raise concerns safely. A code of conduct is a starting requirement; sustained compliance and remedy are the outcomes that matter.

How does independent research assess HP?

KnowTheChain’s 2025 forced-labour benchmark ranked HP fourth of 45 companies, scoring it 48 out of 100. It recognised stronger disclosure about risk assessment and supplier-worker grievance mechanisms, while calling for better purchasing practices and remedy. The researchers also identified two supply-chain forced-labour allegations for which HP had not disclosed response steps or remedy outcomes in the reviewed evidence. That is a dated disclosure finding, not proof that a specific laptop was made with forced labour. A comparatively high rank in this benchmark can coexist with serious remaining gaps. Purchasing practices connect consumer value with worker treatment. Suppliers need realistic production schedules and prices that cover labour costs; transferring all the pressure of a cheap offer down the chain can undermine the safeguards a brand publishes. This research does not establish the labour conditions behind any single retail discount.

Are HP laptops easy to repair?

There is concrete support for selected models. In May 2025, iFixit expanded its partnership with HP to cover EliteBook 840 and 845 generations G7, G8 and G9, plus the 840 Aero G8, with parts, tools and repair guides. It highlights access to common components and free service documentation. iFixit is a repair specialist and an HP partner here, which is relevant context for its positive assessment. That evidence should stay attached to those models. A thin consumer laptop, gaming machine and older business notebook can have different batteries, memory layouts and spare-parts availability. Before buying, locate the exact model’s service guide and check whether the battery, storage, keyboard and charging connection can be replaced at an acceptable cost.

For a refurbished machine, include battery condition, charger, warranty and any required repairs in the total price. A low sticker price loses its appeal if the first necessary part is unavailable. Repair access is a practical consumer benefit, but it does not settle the separate questions about factory workers or minerals.

What about mining and environmental claims?

HP’s August 2026 minerals guidance says its due-diligence programme covers cobalt, nickel, lithium and natural graphite in addition to tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold. It describes identifying and mitigating risks, including through industry collaboration. That is broader scope, not a guarantee that every mine in a laptop’s supply chain is free of harm. HP publishes product carbon-footprint information covering manufacturing, distribution, use and end of life. Its methodology page warns that comparisons require aligned assumptions and boundaries. This is more useful than comparing two headline carbon numbers calculated differently, or assuming a claim about recycled material covers the entire device. Product footprint methodology

The company retains a goal to halve value-chain emissions by 2030 against 2019 and reach net zero by 2040. These are future commitments. Our preferred decision process is simple: keep a suitable working laptop in service; if replacement is necessary, choose a model with documented repair support, sufficient performance and a realistic ownership cost. HP has examples worth examining on those terms. The brand name alone cannot answer the ethical question.
