Is Nike Ethical?

Nike offers useful defect protection and a route to buy refurbished shoes, but a premium price does not establish fair factory pay. Its supplier standards describe progress towards adequate wages rather than universal achievement. Our verdict is cautious: choose for a specific need and fit, and ask for worker-level results behind broad corporate claims.

Who owns Nike?

Nike is the brand of publicly traded NIKE, Inc. Its 2026 proxy records substantial Class A holdings through Swoosh, LLC and the Knight family’s ownership arrangements. It is therefore misleading to describe Nike as simply a private company owned outright by its founder, or as a brand belonging to Adidas. Current ownership record

That distinction matters when following responsibility. A supplier may employ the people sewing a garment, while Nike controls its commercial relationship with that supplier. Public shareholders and founders are part of the ownership story; they are not the same thing as the factory operator.

Do factory workers earn a living wage?

In its July 2025 response about collectively bargained wages in Cambodia, Nike said suppliers must develop strategies towards pay covering basic needs and some discretionary income. It was reviewing the role of ACT, an initiative supporting collective bargaining, and argued that suppliers should participate because they directly employ workers. The question for a shopper is what sits behind the average. Does it include production workers and managers together? Is overtime necessary to reach the stated pay? What proportion of workers, rather than factories, meet a credible local living-cost benchmark? A brand should answer these questions with evidence that workers can challenge. Paying more for a limited edition does not tell you how much reaches the person making it.

Does recycled material make a Nike shoe sustainable?

Nike reports that raw materials represented 34% of its carbon footprint in financial year 2024. Its materials approach includes recycled polyester and lower-carbon leather, alongside work on foam and rubber. These are company-reported environmental measures, not an independent rating of the shoe on your shortlist. Material and carbon explanation

A useful product claim identifies the material, its proportion and the part of the item concerned. Recycled fabric in an upper does not describe the sole, adhesive or lining. Nor does it establish a repair route once those parts separate. If avoiding animal materials matters to you, check the complete specification rather than interpreting recycled content as animal-free.

Is there really a two-year shoe guarantee?

Nike’s US help page allows inspection of a suspected material or workmanship flaw within two years of manufacture. The clock is tied to the tag, not simply two years after purchase. This is useful protection against a manufacturing problem, but it does not promise that every running shoe will last two years. Keep the receipt and photograph the label while it is readable. For discounted older stock, check the manufacture date before assuming you have a full two-year period left. A worn-out sole and an early construction failure are different complaints.

Could refurbished shoes be better value?

Nike’s refurbished programme grades returned footwear by condition and resells eligible pairs after inspection and cleaning. That gives a buyer something concrete to compare: the exact model, condition and price, rather than a vague green collection. Check fit and the applicable terms before buying. Refurbishment is a resale route for suitable returned shoes, not evidence that Nike will resole an exhausted pair you already own. The best purchase is one you will use for its intended purpose; a discount is not a saving if the shoes never leave the cupboard.
