Is Levi’s Ethical?

Levi’s has useful repair services and reports measurable progress on worker representation, but it has not demonstrated living wages throughout its supply chain. Its 2025 water result also fell well short of its target. A well-fitting pair you maintain can be a sensible purchase; the label alone does not establish an ethical advantage.

Who owns Levi’s?

Levi’s belongs to Levi Strauss & Co., a publicly traded company with a powerful family shareholder base. Its 2026 proxy lists substantial holdings for Haas family members and the Peter E. That structure helps explain why a public listing does not mean ownership is widely dispersed in practical terms. The relevant company to hold accountable for Levi’s sourcing, purchasing terms and reporting is Levi Strauss & Co.; the brand is not an independent operation merely sharing a name with it.

What has improved for garment workers?

Levi Strauss reports that 81% of key Tier 1 suppliers had functioning worker-management committees in 2025, up from 66% in 2024. The proportion with women represented in decision-making at 50% or in proportion to the workforce rose from 57% to 66%. These measures sit within its Worker Well-being programme. 2025 worker data

That is a more useful disclosure than simply counting training sessions. It describes a mechanism through which workers may influence workplace decisions, and shows coverage changing over time. It still leaves questions about what complaints achieved, who chose the representatives and whether workers can organise independently. A committee and an independent union are not interchangeable.

Does that mean workers receive fair pay?

Good On You’s July 2026 assessment found no evidence that Levi’s ensures living wages across its supply chain. That is an assessment of the available evidence, not a finding that every supplier underpays workers. Pay fairness needs evidence about actual earnings and living costs, not only structures for consultation. The worker-committee figures support a claim of improved participation coverage; they cannot establish that wages are enough. Nor should a buyer assume that choosing the more expensive cut or finish automatically directs more money to the person who sewed it.

Did Levi’s meet its water target?

No. The latest report records a 23% reduction in freshwater use at the relevant wet-finishing suppliers in high-water-stress locations for 2025, against a 50% target and their 2018 baselines. The company’s 2030 strategy also explains that it phased out the Water<Less product label in 2023 because those techniques had become standard practice. For shoppers, the missed target matters because it tests delivery against a promise. The replacement target is worth monitoring, but a new deadline does not erase the previous shortfall. When comparing product claims, ask whether the number covers cotton growing, fabric processing or garment finishing; those stages are not interchangeable.

Can you repair Levi’s instead of replacing them?

For Red Tab members, Levi’s US help page lists repairs starting at $5, with the actual price depending on the job. It lists certain damaged components, including buttons, rivets and belt loops, as eligible for free repair. Free standard hemming is narrower than it sounds: it applies to members buying jeans that day at the same US Levi’s store with a Tailor Shop. Online and outlet purchases are excluded from that offer. Inspect the pair you already own before browsing replacements. A loose button, a repairable worn patch and a badly deteriorated seat call for different decisions. Ask a tailor what can be fixed, compare the quote with the cost of a suitable replacement, and prioritise fit you will actually wear. These services are a practical strength; they do not resolve the separate questions about factory pay and water use.
