Are ASUS Laptops Ethical?

Brand ethicsPhones & computers
Mashinii Research · Sources checked

ASUS deserves a cautious assessment on consumer fairness. Independent scrutiny exposed serious warranty-process concerns, and the company acknowledged shortcomings and promised changes. Those commitments matter, but they do not prove consistently good service today. A suitable laptop can still be worthwhile if its repair options, memory limits and local support terms fit the years you expect to own it.

Who owns ASUS laptops?

ASUS laptops are part of ASUSTeK Computer Inc., the Taiwanese company identified in its 2025 financial statements. Zenbook, Vivobook and its gaming products belong within that business. The filing also explains the historical separation of its contract-manufacturing operations; a factory company and a retail laptop brand should not be treated as interchangeable simply because of that history.

For an ethical purchase, the brand remains accountable for its design, supplier requirements and customer service. But the product family still matters. A gaming machine with replaceable modules and a thin Zenbook with onboard memory present different long-term choices, even when they share a logo.

What went wrong with ASUS warranty handling?

In June 2024, GamersNexus published commitments obtained directly from ASUS customer-service leadership after investigating warranty handling. These included reconsidering disputed claims and refunding qualifying charges for unnecessary repairs customers felt pressured to accept alongside warranty work. This was original reporting and an on-record company discussion, not a court ruling.

The investigation included a ROG Ally handheld, so its hardware fault should not be described as an ASUS laptop defect. The wider relevance is the repair process: whether unrelated damage becomes a reason to charge for, or obstruct, a covered repair. We would not infer a current failure rate or a universal policy violation from the investigated cases.

Has ASUS fixed those customer-service problems?

In its May 2024 service update, ASUS acknowledged that warranty communications and repairs had not consistently met its standards. It described clearer evidence in quotations, improved repair reports and quoting cosmetic repairs only when requested or when damage affected function. It also said component-level paid repairs should be offered where feasible rather than defaulting to larger replacements.

These are useful standards against which a current claim can be judged, rather than proof that every repair centre now applies them correctly. For a disputed charge, ask for photographs, the failed component, the reason it is excluded and a separation between necessary and optional work. Keep the original fault description and the written quotation. A repair quote should allow an informed decision, not require the customer to guess what they are paying for.

What does ASUS disclose about factory labour?

ASUS publishes a summary of labour and safety audit results covering findings and corrective actions through 2025. It explicitly describes continued monitoring of suppliers at risk of excessive working hours, using monthly data and follow-up. The company says its response includes production scheduling, workforce planning and attention to wages and social-insurance payments.

This is a company-published account of audit work, not independent confirmation that conditions have been corrected throughout the supply chain. The fact that hours require continuing monitoring is itself relevant: supplier audits should not be read as a clean bill of health. The evidence supports asking whether changes reduce actual overtime, not simply whether another audit has taken place.

Will a thin ASUS laptop become expensive to keep?

The Zenbook 14 UX3405 specification lists onboard memory. Buyers should therefore choose capacity on the basis that it is not a later plug-in memory upgrade. This is an example from a named model, not a statement about all ASUS laptops. A premium display and slim body do not tell you how easily the battery, keyboard or charging hardware can be serviced.

Compare the exact configuration with a repairable alternative before relying on a sale percentage. Ask for battery and screen repair options, and distinguish a manufacturer warranty from an optional service contract. A low initial price loses value if a foreseeable repair costs more than you are willing to spend; equally, an expensive specification is unnecessary if your work will never use it.

What data can ASUS software collect?

ASUS’s data-collection explanation describes logs such as crashes, update results and hardware usage, plus interactions with ASUS applications. ASUS characterises the data described there as anonymous. That attribution matters: it is the company’s description, not an independent test of re-identification risk or every service installed on a laptop.

Review the actual software and available privacy choices when setting up the machine. Our buying position remains conditional: ASUS can offer a useful product, but the strongest case includes an affordable route to repair and customer-service practices that match its written commitments. Better evidence of sustained repair outcomes and improved supplier hours would make the ethical assessment stronger.
