Mars is commonly treated as a chocolate company. It is also one of the world’s largest pet-care businesses, an owner of veterinary hospitals, and the parent behind food brands such as Ben’s Original and Dolmio.
The business is privately owned by the Mars family, so it publishes less financial detail than a listed consumer-goods group. Following its acquisition of Kellanova, Mars describes itself as a business with more than $65 billion in annual sales and 170,000 employees.
Chocolate, sweets and gum brands owned by Mars
Mars owns many of the confectionery aisle’s best-known labels:
- M&M’s
- Snickers
- Skittles
- Twix
- Mars
- Milky Way
- Dove or Galaxy, depending on the market
- Bounty
- Maltesers
- 3 Musketeers
- Starburst
- Extra
- Orbit
- Doublemint
- Hubba Bubba
The regional naming matters. Dove chocolate in the United States is related to the Galaxy brand sold in Britain and other markets. It is not the Dove personal-care brand owned by Unilever.
Following Mars’s acquisition of Kellanova, its snacking portfolio also includes major brands such as Pringles and Cheez-It. Consumers should expect older ownership lists published before completion of that transaction to be incomplete.
Pet food and animal-care brands
Pet care is not a side business for Mars. Its portfolio includes:
- Royal Canin
- Pedigree
- Whiskas
- Cesar
- Sheba
- Iams in relevant markets
- Eukanuba in relevant markets
- Nutro
- Greenies
- Temptations
- Wisdom Panel
Mars says Royal Canin is its largest individual brand and that its pet-care division contains more than 50 global brands.
Veterinary hospitals and diagnostics
Mars also owns substantial veterinary-service networks:
- Banfield Pet Hospital
- VCA Animal Hospitals
- BluePearl Pet Hospital
- AniCura
- Linnaeus
- Antech diagnostics
This is an ownership relationship many pet owners never see. A pet-food purchase and a veterinary visit can both generate revenue for the same private parent.
Food and nutrition brands
Mars’s meal and pantry brands include:
- Ben’s Original
- Dolmio
- Seeds of Change
- Tasty Bite
- MasterFoods in relevant markets
- Suzi Wan in relevant markets
Mars also owns KIND, which sits between its health-oriented and snacking portfolios.
Is Mars publicly traded?
No. Mars, Incorporated is privately held. You cannot buy Mars shares directly through a public stock exchange, and it will not appear as a normal holding in an index fund.
Private ownership does not make the company invisible, but it changes transparency. Public companies must file detailed recurring reports with securities regulators. Mars chooses what it publishes beyond legal requirements, making independent comparison harder.
Why the parent company matters
Brand-level marketing can create the impression that Royal Canin, M&M’s, KIND and VCA are unrelated businesses. They operate in different categories, but strategic decisions, lobbying, sourcing standards and profits ultimately connect to Mars.
That does not mean every controversy transfers automatically across every brand. It means consumers evaluating a parent company should not mistake a change of label for a change of owner.
