Is Valentino Ethical?

Brand ethicsLuxury
Mashinii Research · Sources checked

Valentino deserves scrutiny over supplier labour conditions, alongside recognition that court supervision of its accessories subsidiary ended early in April 2026. Its fur ban and fabric-reuse project are specific improvements, not a complete ethical endorsement. A high purchase price still does not establish living wages, animal-free materials or responsible conditions throughout the production chain.

What happened in the Valentino labour case?

In May 2025, a Milan court placed Valentino Bags Lab, the accessories-producing subsidiary, under judicial administration over exploitation at subcontractors. Reuters reported on April 7, 2026 that the measure had ended early. Describing the subsidiary as still under that administration would therefore be out of date. Case outcome and background

Valentino welcomed the court’s decision and said it had strengthened governance, introduced more targeted supplier qualification and improved supply-chain monitoring. That response belongs alongside the original concern. Ending supervision is a material development; it is not a public guarantee that every worker in every future production run will face acceptable conditions. Company response reported by Reuters

The case is relevant because the ethical question sits behind the finished accessory: who actually makes it, how subcontracting is checked and whether commercial pressure reaches workers further down the chain. Craftsmanship in the final product cannot establish that those relationships were managed responsibly. We should judge subsequent progress by evidence of worker protection as well as by changes to management procedures.

Who owns Valentino: Mayhoola or Kering?

Mayhoola holds 70% and Kering 30%. Their September 2025 amendment says the ownership structure will not change before 2028 at the earliest, postponing options that had previously been exercisable sooner. Kering’s minority stake should not be described as full ownership or an already-completed takeover. Shareholders’ agreement amendment

This matters when reading sustainability claims. A minority investor’s wider standards or results are not automatically evidence about every Valentino supplier. The brand’s own reporting and actions are the appropriate starting point, and ownership changes should be checked against completed transactions rather than proposed deals.

Does Valentino prove that workers earn a living wage?

Valentino says it published its first supplier code of conduct in 2024 to strengthen the principles governing its supply-chain relationships. A code sets expectations; buyers also need evidence that suppliers meet them and that workers receive remedy when they do not. The later labour case is a reason to examine implementation closely. Supplier-code disclosure

Good On You’s December 16, 2025 assessment rates the people category 2 out of 5 and identifies a lack of evidence that supply-chain workers receive living wages. That rating predates the April 2026 end of court supervision. It should not be presented as an assessment of those later improvements, nor does the later development by itself answer the pay question. Dated external assessment

The useful missing information is actual pay against a locally relevant living-wage benchmark, coverage of subcontractors and evidence that workers can challenge problems safely. A retailer’s own staff pay or an Italian production address would not substitute for that supply-chain evidence.

Does Valentino’s fur ban mean animal-free?

No. Valentino’s current policy excludes pelts from animals raised specifically for fur, such as mink, fox and chinchilla. It explicitly leaves out pelts from animals in the food supply chain, including sheep. It also says angora was discontinued from 2022. These are defined material restrictions, not a ban on every animal-derived material. Exact fur-ban scope

That distinction is easy to lose in a headline. If your priority is avoiding animal materials, inspect the composition of the specific garment, bag or shoe. If your priority is animal welfare within animal-based production, the question is how sourcing standards are verified. “Fur-free” alone answers neither question for the full collection.

What does the fabric-reuse project change?

Valentino’s Sleeping Stock project works with textile reseller Tissu Market to find uses for dormant couture and ready-to-wear fabrics. The company reports around 22,000 metres reused. That is a tangible activity involving existing material; it should not be converted into a claim that all new Valentino products use reclaimed fabric or that the group has eliminated waste. Sleeping Stock project

A practical buying decision starts with the item and its intended life. Check whether its finish, decoration and construction suit regular use, and ask about repairability before paying. For a used accessory, condition and the availability of a replacement fitting can matter more to value than its original retail price.

Our view remains qualified: the early end of supervision and the company’s corrective steps are relevant progress, while wage transparency and sustained subcontractor oversight still deserve attention. Reuse and selected animal-material bans add useful detail, but they should not crowd out the people making the products.
