Is Super Duolingo Ethical?

Brand ethicsSubscriptions
Mashinii Research · Sources checked

Super Duolingo can fund a useful learning habit, but a paid plan is not proof of better education or stronger privacy. Its owner’s push to automate work deserves scrutiny, alongside a later retreat from evaluating staff on AI use. Judge the subscription by learning progress and fair treatment of people, not the pressure to preserve a streak.

Who owns Super Duolingo, and what are you buying?

Super is a subscription offered by Duolingo, Inc., the publicly traded education company. It is separate from the higher Max tier. The company’s 2025 annual report describes free course access alongside paid features, rather than presenting payment as a prerequisite for all learning. That distinction matters if an upgrade screen makes the paid route feel like the only serious option. Duolingo’s annual report

Before committing, compare the features shown in your own account. Do not buy Super expecting every conversation feature advertised for Max. Equally, do not assume a feature will remain exclusive to a paid tier indefinitely. The sensible purchase is the learning experience currently offered to you, at its full renewal cost.

Does the business reward learning or keeping you hooked?

Duolingo’s published strategy names both an educational mission and commercial objectives: growing daily use, improving retention and converting more people into subscribers. It describes experimentation with the purchase experience as part of that strategy. These are the company’s stated incentives, not evidence of a regulatory finding against it. Company strategy

A regular practice prompt can help a learner return. But returning every day, buying an upgrade and learning to understand unfamiliar speech are different outcomes. Our concern is the gap between what an app can readily count and what a learner actually needs. A streak is evidence of attendance; it is not, by itself, evidence of language competence.

Use a concrete test before renewing: can you now understand a short unfamiliar recording, explain a real situation or write something without the app’s prompts? If the paid features remove an obstacle to doing that, they have a clearer purpose than simply making a progress counter easier to maintain.

What happened in the AI and jobs controversy?

In April 2025, The Verge reported Duolingo’s internal plan to gradually stop using contractors for work AI could perform. That raises a real question about the livelihoods of people supplying expertise, even if the company expands its permanent workforce. It does not establish that all contractors were dismissed or that every lesson became machine-written. Original reporting on the memo

In a May 2026 interview, CEO Luis von Ahn said the company had not conducted layoffs and had increased employee numbers. He also said Duolingo removed the blanket requirement to assess employees on AI use, after staff argued it did not always improve their work. He acknowledged that generating content at scale can introduce poor material and said quality should take priority. The CEO’s response

That is a meaningful change in management policy. It still leaves two separate questions: whether employees are treated fairly, and what happens to contractors whose assignments disappear. Growth in the former group does not answer the latter. Nor should an assurance about quality replace evidence that learners are receiving accurate teaching.

Does paying remove the privacy trade-off?

Duolingo’s own iOS App Store privacy disclosure lists categories potentially used for cross-company tracking, including identifiers, usage information and purchases. Apple explicitly says it has not verified this developer-supplied disclosure. It covers the app broadly and can vary by feature or age; it does not demonstrate that every Super subscriber experiences every listed practice. Developer privacy disclosure

An advertising-free experience and a no-data-collection commitment are different promises. This evidence does not justify describing Super as a privacy subscription. Be particularly careful about what you voluntarily put into open-ended exercises: practising a language does not require sharing genuine financial details or another person’s private information.

How do you stop an unwanted renewal?

For a subscription bought through Google Play, uninstalling the app does not cancel billing; cancellation belongs in Google Play’s subscription controls. For Apple-billed subscriptions, use Apple’s subscription settings and check the displayed expiry or renewal status. These are billing-provider instructions, not a promise of an automatic refund for an unused year. Google Play cancellation Apple cancellation

Super is easier to justify when its paid features support a measurable learning goal and its renewal fits your budget. The ethical reservations are strongest when engagement pressure, opaque data expectations or automation of skilled work are treated as incidental to that purchase.
