NordVPN offers a more substantive privacy case than an unsupported promise: it reports repeated external checks of its no-logs systems. But trust also depends on honest advertising and fair billing. A UK advertising ruling and the difference between introductory and renewal terms justify caution. Buy for a defined privacy need, with renewal disabled if you do not want another term.
Who is behind NordVPN?
NordVPN belongs to the Nord Security business, whose current company history traces the service to 2012 and records outside investment in 2022 and 2023. It is a commercial cybersecurity provider. Its leadership includes founders Tomas Okmanas and Eimantas Sabaliauskas. The ownership question matters because you are entrusting a company with part of your internet connection, rather than buying an anonymous utility. Nord Security’s company history and leadership
Commercial funding is not itself evidence that a VPN misuses data. It does mean that privacy promises, subscription revenue and growth incentives should be assessed together. A reassuring brand story is less valuable than clear data rules and an exit process you can actually complete.
What does the latest no-logs assessment establish?
On 3 February 2026, NordVPN said Deloitte Lithuania had completed its sixth independent no-logs assurance engagement. The work covered 10 November to 12 December 2025 and examined infrastructure, configurations and supporting operations. According to NordVPN, the conclusion supported the design and implementation of its no-logs statement. NordVPN’s account of the assurance work
There is an important access limitation: NordVPN makes the full report available through a customer account. This guide reviewed the public company summary, not that complete report. The summary itself describes a point-in-time assessment. It supports a narrower conclusion than a promise that every future version of the service will be flawless.
Our assessment gives repeated external examination credit, while keeping the evidence label honest. A report commissioned by the provider can still be useful; readers should be able to distinguish the auditor’s complete findings from the provider’s explanation of them.
Does no-logs mean NordVPN knows nothing about me?
No. NordVPN’s support explanation says it retains account information including email, login credentials and payment identifiers needed for refunds. It distinguishes those records from online activity while connected to the VPN. That is why a no-logs claim should not be read as a promise that the business holds no personal data about its customers. NordVPN’s account-data explanation
The Electronic Frontier Foundation explains the wider limit: a VPN changes which network operator you trust; it does not remove tracking through logged-in accounts or cookies. That guidance applies to VPNs generally and is not an endorsement of NordVPN. A subscription should address a particular network-privacy problem, rather than create an expectation of complete anonymity. EFF’s guide to choosing a VPN
Has NordVPN overstated its protection?
In January 2023, the UK Advertising Standards Authority upheld a complaint about a NordVPN radio advertisement. It found that the unqualified malware claim implied protection against all malware attacks, which the supplied evidence did not establish. The ad could not appear again in that form. ASA’s ruling and advertiser response
NordVPN argued that its additional Threat Protection feature checked downloads, supplied testing evidence and said listeners would understand the language as creative rather than absolute. The regulator disagreed. This was a finding about that advertisement, not a finding that the VPN provided no protection.
The consumer lesson is still relevant: identify the specific feature, supported device and threat being addressed. Do not treat a broad security slogan as a substitute for understanding the limits of the product you are paying for.
Why can the renewal cost more than the deal?
NordVPN’s pricing disclosures say introductory rates apply only to the initial period. Renewal uses the then-applicable price, which may be higher and can change. Annual billing can occur up to 14 days before renewal; the company says it emails a notification before charging subscriptions longer than one month. Offer and charging disclosures
That makes the charge date more useful than the service expiry date when deciding whether to continue. Compare the full initial payment with the next term’s total and duration, rather than comparing only monthly equivalents. A long introductory commitment and an annual renewal are different purchasing decisions.
How do I cancel, and will I get my money back?
For direct purchases, NordVPN’s instructions say to open Billing in Nord Account, cancel auto-renewal and confirm the status has changed to off. A confirmation email should follow. App-store subscriptions need the relevant store’s cancellation process. Cancellation instructions
A refund is a separate request. The 30-day guarantee applies to the initial purchase, not renewed subscriptions unless local law requires otherwise. NordVPN directs eligible customers through support and a refund confirmation flow; Apple purchases require Apple’s refund process. Refund policy
For an ethical purchase, the key question is whether both the protection and the commitment match your needs. NordVPN’s reported assurance work is a reason to examine it seriously. Its renewal structure is a reason to make that decision deliberately before the next charge.
