Michael Kors has published labour safeguards and a resale programme, but the available evidence does not establish living wages across its supply chain. Consumer fairness also matters here: the proposed merger with Coach’s owner raised competition concerns, while branded resale pays sellers in store credit. Neither a luxury label nor a resale offer is an ethical guarantee.
Who owns Michael Kors now?
Michael Kors belongs to Capri Holdings, alongside Jimmy Choo. Capri completed the sale of Versace to Prada on December 2, 2025. That transaction did not transfer Michael Kors to Prada, and the separate proposed acquisition of Capri by Coach owner Tapestry did not proceed. Older brand-family diagrams can therefore be misleading. Completed Versace sale · Capri filing on merger termination
Why did regulators challenge the Coach–Michael Kors deal?
The US Federal Trade Commission sued in April 2024 to stop Tapestry buying Capri. Its complaint argued that combining Coach, Kate Spade and Michael Kors would remove important head-to-head competition, including competition over prices, promotions and design. This was a challenge to the proposed transaction, not a finding that every existing Michael Kors price was unlawful. FTC complaint announcement
Capri’s subsequent filing records that the companies terminated the merger agreement in November 2024 and dropped their appeal; the FTC administrative proceeding was dismissed in December. Consumers should not be told that the businesses merged simply because an acquisition was announced. Recorded outcome
This is an ethical question about market power as well as fashion. Keeping competing brands under different owners can matter to the incentives behind discounts and product development. For an individual purchase, compare the final price and specification across retailers; a large advertised reduction does not tell you whether the item offers better value than another bag at the same actual price.
What does Michael Kors disclose about its supply chain?
Capri’s statement for the year ended March 29, 2026 says nearly all Michael Kors products, measured by dollar volume, were made in Asia. Manufacturing is principally contracted to third parties, and compliance efforts focus on direct suppliers. It describes supplier audits, worker interviews without managers present and corrective-action processes. Those are meaningful controls, but their existence does not establish what happens throughout every subcontracting tier. FY 2026 supply-chain disclosure
The same statement requires suppliers to prevent worker-paid recruitment fees and repay fees when identified. It also prohibits retaining workers’ identity documents. These are specific protections against dependency and coercion; reporting verified repayments and worker outcomes would make their effectiveness easier to judge. Recruitment and remedy requirements
Good On You’s February 3, 2026 assessment rates the people category 2 out of 5 and finds no evidence that living wages are ensured across the supply chain. That identifies an evidence gap rather than proving every worker is underpaid. The newer company statement adds process detail but does not settle the universal wage question. Independent assessment
Does the environmental programme make each bag sustainable?
Capri describes work on raw-material impacts, water, chemical management and resale or repair services. These are relevant areas for a leather-goods business. Its current nature page is a statement of approach, however, rather than a product-level footprint or proof that every material comes from a fully traced source. Capri’s environmental approach
A claim about packaging, a resale platform or one preferred material should stay attached to that feature. It cannot answer all the questions about leather sourcing, factory energy or total production. When comparing products, ask what the item is actually made from and which claim applies to that material, rather than treating the whole brand as a single environmentally certified product.
Is Michael Kors Pre-Loved good value?
The resale programme’s FAQ says a seller receives 80% of the sale price as a Michael Kors e-gift card after the buyer confirms the condition. Its own example is an $80 card for a $100 sale. That is spending power within the brand, not cash you can use elsewhere. Factor that restriction into any comparison with another resale service. Pre-Loved payout terms
The programme terms describe sales primarily between individual sellers and buyers. Unless a listing states otherwise, purchases are final sale except when the item does not match its described condition; the dispute window is 72 hours after delivery. Buying through a branded site should not be confused with buying a newly manufactured item directly from the brand. Programme terms
Resale can keep a useful bag circulating. It is less compelling as a reason to clear out a serviceable bag merely to spend the credit on another. If you need to buy, inspect condition and likely maintenance needs, compare the actual total cost and keep the wage evidence gap in view. The most defensible choice is a suitable item you will use—not a purchase justified solely by a promotion or green message.
