AI Companies Ranked by Ethics (2026): Who Actually Scores Safest
Two events have made AI ethics a question with money attached. Anthropic confidentially filed for a US IPO in June 2026, while OpenAI was reported to be preparing its own confidential filing. That puts their conduct in front of public-market scrutiny. The litigation wave has also arrived: Florida sued OpenAI over alleged undisclosed ChatGPT risks, while xAI, Meta and other labs face widening safety, copyright and product-liability challenges.
Investors and advisors now need more than a glossy "responsible AI" page. They need to know which companies have a verified adverse record and which do not.
That is what we measure. Our scores run from -100 to +100 across eleven values. A score of 0 does not mean a company is virtuous. It means there is no verified adverse record in that area, which is different from exoneration. Negative scores reflect documented harm drawn from court filings, regulatory action, investigative reporting and NGO findings, not corporate self-assessment.
The Ranking: Safe & Smart Tech
The AI-relevant dimension is Safe & Smart Tech. It captures how a company builds and deploys technology that affects users, from model safety and child protection to deepfakes and the integrity of its deployment decisions. We rank the major AI players on this value first, then look at their broader profiles.
| Rank | Company | Safe & Smart Tech | Other notable scores |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Anthropic | +40 | Honest -20, Planet -20, No War 0 |
| 2 | Apple | +20 | Planet +40, Zero Waste +50, Fair Pay -30 |
| 3 | AMD | +10 | No War -30, Planet -30, Honest +10 |
| 4 | NVIDIA | 0 | No War -40, Fair Trade -30, Honest -20 |
| 4 | OpenAI | 0 | Honest -10, No War -20, Planet -40 |
| 6 | xAI | -10 | No War -30, Honest -20, Planet -50 |
| 7 | Google / Alphabet | -20 | Honest -30, Respect +50, Planet +10 |
| 8 | Microsoft | -30 | Respect +50, Better Health +30, Planet +30 |
| 9 | Meta | -50 | Honest -40, Planet +40 |
Anthropic is the only major AI company that scores positive on tech safety. Meta sits at the bottom. The spread between them is 90 points on the single value that defines the category.
Why Anthropic Leads on Safety
Anthropic's +40 on Safe & Smart Tech is the highest in the cohort, and it is the only positive figure. The company has built its public identity around interpretability research, red-teaming and staged deployment, and so far the adverse record on tech safety is thin compared with its peers.
That lead is narrow, not absolute. Anthropic scores -20 on Honest & Fair Business and -20 on Planet-Friendly Business, reflecting unresolved questions over training-data provenance and the energy footprint of large-scale compute. Its 0 on No War, No Weapons is a no-verified-record reading, not a clean bill of health, given the sector's drift toward defence contracts.
We treat Anthropic as the safety leader on present evidence while noting that a high safety score does not make a company positive across the board. The full comparison is in our OpenAI vs Anthropic ethics breakdown and our Anthropic IPO ethics review.
The Hardware and Big-Tech Tier
The chipmakers and platform incumbents cluster in the middle, and their profiles diverge sharply once you look past the headline AI number.
Apple posts +20 on tech safety, the second-best reading, alongside a strong environmental record (+40 Planet, +50 Zero Waste). Its weak point is -30 on Fair Pay & Worker Respect, tied to supply-chain labour findings.
AMD edges positive at +10 on safety, while NVIDIA sits at a neutral 0. NVIDIA's problems lie elsewhere: -40 on No War, No Weapons, -30 on Fair Trade & Ethical Sourcing and -20 on Honest & Fair Business. The company that supplies the picks and shovels of the AI boom carries its risk in arms exposure and trade conduct, not in product safety.
Microsoft is the most split profile in the group. It scores -30 on Safe & Smart Tech and -60 on No War, the latter the worst military reading in our cohort, driven by defence and surveillance contracting. Yet it leads on Respect for Cultures & Communities (+50), Better Health for All (+30) and Planet (+30). A buyer who cares only about AI safety would avoid it; one weighting social and environmental factors would rate it among the better large caps.
Google / Alphabet lands at -20 on safety and -30 on honesty, offset by +50 on Respect and +10 on Planet. We cover the chip-and-platform tier in detail in our AI ethics scorecard for NVIDIA, Meta and Google.
The Bottom: Meta, xAI and the Deployment Problem
The two lowest scorers share a pattern: aggressive deployment ahead of safeguards.
Meta records -50 on Safe & Smart Tech and -40 on Honest & Fair Business, the weakest safety figure in the ranking. Its lone bright spot is +40 on Planet. The safety score reflects a long adverse record around content harms, child-safety findings and the rapid release of open-weight models without commensurate guardrails.
xAI is the worst overall profile. It scores -10 on safety, -30 on No War, -20 on Honest and -50 on Planet. The Grok deepfake litigation is the kind of verified adverse event that drives a tech-safety score down, and the absence of any positive value reading sets xAI apart from peers that at least offset weakness in one area with strength in another.
OpenAI sits between the leaders and the laggards at a neutral 0 on safety, with -10 Honest, -20 No War and -40 Planet. The neutral safety reading is notable given Florida v. OpenAI; it reflects that we score on verified findings rather than pending allegations, and a live case has not yet resolved into a confirmed adverse record. How to Read These Numbers
Three rules keep the ranking honest.
First, a zero is not a gold star. NVIDIA and OpenAI both score 0 on safety. That means no verified adverse tech-safety record to date, not that the question is settled. Pending litigation can move these figures.
Second, no single value tells the whole story. Microsoft is poor on AI safety and strong on health, respect and the environment. Apple is strong on safety and the environment but weak on worker pay. The right weighting depends on what an investor actually cares about.
Third, profiles change. IPO filings, regulatory rulings and new investigative reporting all feed the scores. The companies filing to go public this year will face more disclosure, and more disclosure tends to surface more evidence.
The headline holds: Anthropic is the only major AI company positive on tech safety at +40, while Meta and xAI anchor the bottom on safety and honesty. Everyone else is a mix.
